Meg and Jim were taillights by 7 am. Mary was up and so were they. They ended up getting home in the early afternoon and were able to relax. We had a great breakfast with Shel, Lisa, and Hayley and then hit the road.
On the road, we received a text from Jen’s sister Beth who was in Syracuse, NY visiting her husband’s engineering job site. We realized that lunch in Syracuse was totally doable and would be awesome. So we did it. The park they picked was excellent. There was a magician, a park for the kids to run, a great view of the lake, and clean bathrooms. We were able to visit Beth and Nick (Timothy, Joey, and Anthony as well) and get back on the road swiftly.
When we got in the car at 2:45 and Jen said, we will be home at 7:20. She nailed it! Along the way, the US was playing Japan for the World Cup. The Martino’s, Cahill-Farella’s and we drafted World Cup teams. The winning team has to make a dessert from that country the next time we all get together. So Tricia Martino was up against Simon (or, US vs. Japan). Samantha and the kids were following the games during the entire trip. Samantha made window signs for the truck as we drove the last 300 miles. We contacted Bobby Bowman in Virginia, and we were able to have a FaceTime session with him during the shootout (while driving down the NY Thruway and MassPike). Oh well, I guess we will have some green tea pound cake when we meet up with our friends.
We pulled into our driveway in great spirits. We had just finished our recap of the vacation and went over the 30+ questions from day 1 with the kids (see Day 1 for more details). Molly nailed the most correct answers from the kids, and Jen won overall. Each day we asked the kids to guess the arrival temperature of each stop. Greg guessed the most number of correct temperature days: 5; 4 of the guesses were exactly correct.
My folks and brother Peter came out to help us breakdown the truck and get our life back together. We are very appreciative for their help.
Also, when we pulled up our porch was decorated with Welcome Home banners, gifts, champagne and our fridge was filled with necessities. Without the Martino’s, Cahill-Farella’s, and JJ and Jill, our entry home would have been boring and uneventful. We were totally hooked up!
Final miles: 8222
Final hours in the truck: 150
Final gas bill....TBD
